Why Nagourney exists
Nagourney Cancer Institute and Metabolomycs study cancer through cell metabolism, which provides the energy and materials for growth and reproduction. Metabolomics examines the small molecules made or used as the body processes food, drugs, chemicals, or its own tissue. The aim is to identify metabolic pathways a cancer relies on for growth and survival that could be targeted with potentially effective therapies.

Call before biopsy or surgery
Patients contact the institute before a biopsy or surgery so the lab can coordinate obtaining a sample to analyze.

Sample collection
Living tumor cells are collected during biopsy or surgery, from fluid accumulations in the lung or abdomen, or from blood or bone marrow for hematologic cancers. Samples must arrive at the lab within 24 to 36 hours.

Lab analysis
Living cancer cells are exposed to drugs and drug combinations to measure how the patient's cancer responds.

Results
Once the sample is received in the laboratory, results are generally available within 7 days.
